"Benjamin Button" Gets a Criterion Release

Unless you're Wes Anderson or Guy Maddin, most new films don't get a DVD release from the prestigious Criterion Collection.

But David Fincher's 13 time Academy Award nominee (but only 3 time winner) The Curious Case of Benjamin Button will be released by Criterion on May 5.

Not quite sure why...but hey, the case is pretty.

My guess would be that this is a cash cow opportunity for Criterion. I don't begrudge them that. I wasn't a fan of the movie, but if it brings in some money for Criterion I am all for it.

Most likely. I wonder if the Criterion will be sold in big box stores like Wal-Mart that don't usually carry boutique labels like Criterion?

I hope it brings in enough revenue to keep them churning out the classics.

Well, apparently this was an addition that wasn't announced in the monthly roundups. The June releases, for example, were spilled this week, and nothing was said of this for May or June. I am happy this is being done, and while I agree that it is probably one of those releases intended to get teh cash flow rolling, I will also say that Criterion and David Fincher have had a long association. Criterion released laserdiscs of both THE GAME and SEVEN in deluxe box sets. These two LDs were among the most celebrated at the time of release.

So it's Fincher here, no question about it.

BENJAMIN BUTTON placed #9 on my Top 10 list, it's mainly a lovely film.
