The Animated Feature Race is On

AMPAS has released its list of 14 films that will be vying for the 2008 Best Animated Feature award at this year's Oscars. They are:
  1. “Bolt”
  2. “Delgo”
  3. “Dr. Seuss’ Horton Hears a Who!”
  4. “Dragon Hunters”
  5. “Fly Me to the Moon”
  6. “Igor”
  7. “Kung Fu Panda”
  8. “Madagascar: Escape 2 Africa”
  9. “$9.99”
  10. “The Sky Crawlers”
  11. “Sword of the Stranger”
  12. “The Tale of Despereaux”
  13. “WALL-E”
  14. “Waltz with Bashir”
According to the press release, Bolt, Delgo, Dragon Hunters, $9.99, The Sky Crawlers, The Tale of Despereaux, and Waltz with Bashir, have yet to fulfill their Los Angeles qualifying runs, so their eligibility could change, but Bolt and The Tale of Despereaux should definitely meet the requirements, barring another high profile delay, which the way this Oscar season is going so far wouldn't surprise me a bit.

Due to Academy rules, when there are less than 16 eligible films, only three can be nominated. Right now I'm betting on WALL-E, Kung Fu Panda, and Waltz with Bashir.

WALL-E deserves to be the winner of this bunch, and indeed I have no doubt it will snare a nom and win the Oscar. Similarly, KUNG FU PANDA seems a shoe-in as well, and I suspect WALTZ WITH BASHIR will be selected. This means I completely agree with you just said. DESPERAUX would be next up. I saw MADAGASCAR over the weekend and was greatly unimpressed. Let's see what happens.

I hated the first MADAGASCAR, so I've avoided this one. TALE OF DESPERAUX is a definite dark horse and could become a sleeper hit and knock BASHIR off, whose success depends on it being seen. But I think it will get the requisite art-house nod since Miyazaki doesn't have a dog in the race this year...and WALL-E and KUNG FU PANDA seem like shoo-ins. So we'll see.

I agree...WALL-E should and will win this award walking away.

WALL•E is so winning, and KFP is so getting nominated. The third spot is up in the air, I think, despite Waltz with Bashir. I just seem hesitant to say it's GOING to happen. Some people have used Persepolis as precedent, but that (and all the other foreign nominees so far in the category's history) have been lighter and more, um, cartoon-y. Bashir may be a turn off.
