This is rare territory for a children’s movie, and it shows a surprising depth and maturity. It may take a few shortcuts here and there, but it packs a disarming emotional wallop. It is a film filled with breathtaking images, sidesplitting humor and moments powerful enough to make a grown man cry. Just like I couldn’t believe I was saying it about the first one, here I am saying it again about the second — “Kung Fu Panda 2” is one of the best mainstream releases of the year — a treat for all ages that shows that Black and his oversized panda alter-ego are a cinematic gift that keeps on giving.
